Grading and Content

Student work will be classified into one of three categories:  Test, Quiz, Classwork.  Categories are not weighted.  A final grade will be based on total point earned divided by the total points possible.
 
Regular Assignments:  Assignments will range from 15 to 30 points.
Quizzes:  All quizzes will be worth 50 points.
Tests:  All tests will be worth 100 points.  This category will include projects and lengthy tasks such as Read and Write.
 
BHS Grading Scale
A - 90-100
B - 80-89
C - 70-79
D - 60-69
 
Here are some of the things you can expect to learn in ESL class this year:
 
Vocabulary/Spelling:  Vocabulary will usually be gleaned from the texts we are reading in class. We will have quizzes.
 
Grammar:  Ongoing throughout the year embedded in writing activities. 
     Sentences/Sentence Structure
     Parts of Speech:  Nouns, Adverbs, Verbs, Pronouns, Conjunctions, Prepositions, and      Adjectives
     Use of all punctuation
     Subject and verb agreement
     Agreement of pronouns with the antecedents
     Verbals:  infinitives, participials, gerunds
     
Writing:  Ongoing throughout the year
     Writing correct sentences
     Organizing and writing paragraphs and essays
     Writing various types of paragraphs:  summary, descriptive, persuasive, expository
     Using transition words and phrases in writing
     Writing in different formats: letters, reports, lists, invitations, flyers, brochures, journals, etc.
     
Speaking:  Ongoing throughout the year
    Conversation cards/language cards
    Responding to student news stories
    Practicing using correct verb forms in speaking activities
    Practice recording a speaking activity on content area tasks.
    Presenting information during class.
 
Listening:  Ongoing throughout the year
   Students engage in listening and responding during various listening tasks. 
 
Reading:  Ongoing throughout the year.
Students read informational articles related to school classroom content to gain vocabulary and improve comprehension.  They will normally answer a variety of questions about the reading. The students will write in response to articles they read.
 
Students read fiction about one-fourth of our class time  We use these readings to learn about the following:  theme, tone, mood, simile, metaphor, setting, characterization, plot, plot devices.
