we recording all right now getting back to Reagan here another's famous into this happened to late 70s was an incident Three Mile Island talk about that for just a minute Three Mile Island was a nuclear power plant up in Pennsylvania and 3 weeks before this happened there was a big hit movie out called The China Syndrome Michael Douglas and it was a movie about a nuclear power plant where everything went haywire and they had this and it literally was melting into the core of the earth air freight would melt all way to China and it freaked everybody out cuz we built a bunch of nuclear power plants in the 70s a lot of people like going on terrible we need to get rid of those we need to go back to like burning coal or oil or something like that anyway there was a spike at one of the reactors at Three Mile Island it didn't release any radiation it didn't do any harm no big deal it was contained everything work like it was supposed to everybody in the country about nuclear power for a long time we need build any reactors  that's a shame because today when all our concerns about global warming  the safest way to generate power that doesn't pollute the air and doesn't add to greenhouse gases and we have a infinite supply of it is nuclear power if you're going to have electric cars all over the place now you're going to need a whole lot more nuclear reactors because our current great if everybody goes to charge in those cars every night you're going to crash the grid every night  so this is one we're still dealing with today now let's talk about Carter  color one barely in 76 UCI can say they took the South and took the mid fast by 1980 it was all over  there's a referendum on the Carter Administration right there Reagan 144 States that's what you call a landslide  in the Electoral College  I want to talk about Reagan here Jimmy riding a bicycle hi Jimmy how are you let me talk about Reagan  Reagan in my humble opinion is the greatest president of the last half of the 20th century  and there's a lot of evidence to back that up folks  some people they don't like and they don't like the brand of conservatism he stood for they don't they don't like the economics he stood for he was against socialism he believed in low taxes but his result are really hard to argue with they really are if you look at the facts of what happened  Reagan came into office with the Reaganomics for the taxes get people back more their money make the government smaller get it out of their way he took a couple of years for the economy to really start benefiting but in 83 try to be just started booming and we went on about a 25-year run they were a couple of little recessions in there but from 1983 to 2008 there was more personal wealth created in the United States than in any 25-year. In any country in the history of the world and a lot of it goes right back to the policies of Ronald Reagan the booms of the 1990s was like to take credit for those were brought a how about the economic policies of Ronald Reagan in the 80s  any Economist will readily admit that to understand Reagan you have to understand this background we talked about his background a little bit was born up in Dixon Illinois Zillow on the way and he was really an All-American kid he had a really interesting life he had a difficult Boyhood though  there's several how scattered around Northern Illinois Reagan's character was his Charisma Reagan had the ability to win you over that Sam Donaldson the famous News man said of Ronald Reagan he said you can tell me you don't like Reagan's policies and I'll say okay but if you tell me you don't like Reagan I'll say you haven't met him  cuz Reagan it's just overwhelming karizmatik personality that could just envelop people Reagan was as lovable in person as Nixon was race of in person you understand what I'm saying  that's the way Reagan was he put people at ease people like them and he learn to make people like it because he was always having to compensate for what he's dad had done  he kind of had a reversed relationship when he was a kid where his he was he was like the adult and its father child  edhe of learn to be Charming he learned it to get on people's good side it's serving the rest of his life now the other thing you did is he became the Lifeguard literally in high school he was a lifeguard and save several people's lives and he kind of had this compulsion to help people for the rest of his life that came from his relationship with his dad too there's a famous story he used to tell about when he was about 12 or 13 years old and we live in at this house he heard a noise outside you look out the door and out there on the front porch it's fatherhood collapse drunk passed out on the porch it was real cold at night was like zero and Reagan said he remembered thinking there just a second if I just leave him out there and he dies how much better off him and his brother and his mother would be  I thought for second he said can't do it open the door drug is Dad into the hall close the door went upstairs went to bed left his dad passed out on the floor that need to save people it's going to be a compulsion with Reagan for the rest of his life and it's going to driving it's going to motivating  now Reagan grew up into a pretty impressive specimen of a human being he was a big tall good-looking kid athletic had a voice and he ends up getting called on by a talent scout and goes to Hollywood becomes a movie star I won't say Reagan was a great Acura cuz he wasn't a great he was a good actor he was in some good movies I'm going to show you a clip of one later on after they pushed but usually he was not really an after he was like a B+ list accurate though it seems to be accurate was in a movie with a lot of a actors usually he was like Earl Flynn second banana and stuff like that but in about 10 year run where he was a pretty successful actor in Hollywood  that's pretty good for Hollywood well about the time Reagan's movie career in first marriage was winding down he married a movie star named Jane Winans that ended in divorce he remarried another movie star Nancy Davison that would work out they stayed married for talese death they said Mary like 52 years  what about the time it's movie career was did you came a TV store  he had a couple of shows in the 1950s one was called The General Electric Theater that he hosted and he was like this show where they would show documentaries and different things he was the host in the people just got used to him every week being in their house being in them TV screen he also had a show that was about to history where she called Death Valley days and he hosted that so in the 1950s Ronald Reagan was really a household name I'm he was really very much present an American lies  this is Austin when he got active in politics he at first he was the president of the Screen Actors Guild that's we kind of got involved in politics to begin with early in his life he was a committed Democrat he he loved Franklin Roosevelt you love the new deal but as the 50s went on he got more more conservative later when at the 64 Dimension when he spoke in favor and endorsed Barry Goldwater when I asked you what happened to you how to change Reagan had a simple answer he said he said I didn't change he said I didn't leave the Democratic party and the Democratic Party left me in a lot of people a lot of people were transitioning at that time. It's a Democratic party with moving farther to the left and the Republican party was moving father who left as well a lot of people find themselves ideologically lined up differently than they had been  yeah in the late 60s Reagan runs for in becomes the governor California he's the governor of California during all those periods of time in the late sixties early seventies protest who Mets riots all that stuff and he actually does a pretty good job through all that he holds the state together  in 76 runs for the Republican nomination for president against Ford he loses but he gets a lot of attention so he comes back in 1980 and 1980 is his year 1980 Reagan overwhelmingly wins the Republican nomination he runs for real against Carter and it was shooting in a barrel that's the 1980 electoral map like I said at a 50 about the states a landslide  now reggae come to the office in 1981 I love people in the country are pretty unsure about this guy me this is an actor in a movie called Bedtime for Bonzo co-star of the chimpanzee they were people walk around with teeth search a picture to Reagan and the chip and underneath it it said we should have voted for the champ play the president of the United States  Reagan won over a lot of people in America three months into his first term it was quite by accident three months into his first term Reagan was shot  he was delivering a speech at a hotel outside Washington DC if we get a chance we're going to watch a clip of this but probably won't be till Friday he was delivering a speech at a hotel in Washington DC he was walking to the car off the sidewalk and a nut there's the nut right there John Hinckley John Hinckley was just he was certified like you just got out of this silent yay make it convincing said he shot and killed the president a chance Reagan if he shot and killed his true love true love was the actress Jodie Foster need been stalking for about a year and course from Jodie Foster found out that he'd shot the president to get her attention I think her reaction was but  as Reagan walked across the sidewalk Hinckley fired six shots with 22 caliber revolver the first shot hit a Washington police officer he went down in Hip James Brady he was one of the president's aides hit him in the head he left about 20 years after that but he was never the same he's always in a wheelchair  lost his powers of speech  a secret agent stand in Block the present if they're trying to get the present into the limousine and he shot the secret service agent stomach he lived his well he fired a couple more shots shot bounced off the limousine just as they were putting the president in it bounced off the limousine door and it struck the president writer needs the arm and part of the bullet lodged in his lungs the wound was so small they weren't even sure if it hit it first but they figured out when the president started having shortness of breath they're like we got to give the hospital now I came to the hospital  and you got it you got Envision this moment there rolling in the president into the emergency room in a big City Hospital everybody in that hospital just descent it's just chaos every doctor every nurse they all the president just came in with a bullet his check I'm in if you're in that hospital getting some minor how much treated I'm thinking you're just out of luck you're probably standing there going nurse I'm bleeding hello cuz everybody's turn the President Reagan's on this dirty he's getting rolled in and he's kind of looking up with that kind of half granny always had on his face and all these doctors are pushing the Turney it's like 6 I'm around there are pushing the gurney and they're all arguing back and forth they're all yelling each other over who's in charge he's going to be what cuz you think about is a doctor I mean this is an ego saying okay you know who's going to get to take to pull it out of the chest of the president that's going to be me know that's going to be me I mean these guys they all want to be hero right  well they roll them into the or they're they're arguing back and forth and in Reagan's kind of looking up Adam and then all the sudden pretty Tangles you'll be always begin thanks I sure hope all you fellows are Republican got a bullet in his chest and he's making a joke I mean the think about it that is that's Grace Under Pressure folks  if I'm rolling in on that Gurney and I got a bullet in my chest I'm not thinking a joke with the I'm going I say may I mean I'm not I'm not acting that graceful Under Pressure I don't know about you guys I'm thinking not from what deserve to be this year was a secret service agent I don't know if he got a bonus for that or not let me know that's kind of his job you kind of sign on secret service that's job description will get shot in the president where the Ruiz worth it or not now Reagan recovered the American public when they heard the story by the way when he said that I saw him video of years ago with one of the doctors he was talking about you said you know when he said that all the doctors kind of smile and look at him and his one doctor looked at he said well we are today depressant and they fixed him up I found a bullet when he came to in the hospital and he told his wife Nancy he said I forgot to duck Gray Line even people who really didn't like his policies I mean it kind of endear Dragon 2 and just showed hate this is a guy who's got you know he's got grit he's got something to him he's a man of substance 1984 Reagan was firmly in I remember this I was a teenager and I remember this very distinctly nope unless they could have resurrected Franklin Roosevelt they were not bumping him out of the White House just like you know Nathan thinks I'm not going to take up his phone but he's wrong  now Brady for the Democrats I mean the economy was taken off we were rebuilding our defense there was general feeling of optimism in the country so the Democrats makes it looked around and say okay who do we want to get rid of and they chose Monday Monday how you doing I need to change that to think add last year for Mondale Monday I'll have been Jimmy Carter's vice president he was from Minnesota and like Jimmy Carter but he was probably about his competence Jimmy Carter was now  they put Mondeo up and to try to get the women's vote they put Geraldine Ferraro on ticket the first female to ever be on a presidential ticket she ran for vice president on the Democratic ticket in 84 you can still got the majority of the women's vote  Reagan got just the majority of the boat folks I mean 84 you know what presidential election is the ultimate referendum on how good a job the president's doing when an incumbent runs for re-election that's the ultimate Pole right there how well do you think the is it's doing well pretty good he won 49 out of 50 states that would be the largest Electoral College landslide in American history he almost won Minnesota he got 48% of the vote in Minnesota he almost took mondale's home state that would have been $50 for 50 yes just he did not lose Massachusetts he won Massachusetts  yeah look at the map Minnesota is the only who's there  Minnesota's and folks Minnesota Minnesota at the time when we had 10 Electoral College votes you know Reagan took 525 Mondale took 10 I not sure what sports you're in but 5:25 to 10 that's pretty much about kicking let's talk about Reagan when it comes to world affairs because Reagan is famous he is for his comic policies he's also quite well known for basically being the one who puts the Cold War to an end the president prior to Reagan Ford Carter they don't practice what they called Date Aunt this idea that we're going to try to compromise the Russian try to find Common Ground make sense make Reagan's attitude was I don't like to taunt you can't compromise with them you can't reason they are not reasonable people  they want to destroy our way of life so we Must Destroy there at first  Reagan when they invaded Afghanistan Reagan called the Soviets the evil empire he said this is not going to you're not allowed to exist  we're going to counteract them at every punch and we're going to rebuilding on Military and we're going to Destin new technology and we are going to just blow them out of water we're going to come up with so much new stuff that they cannot compete I can't afford to compete and we're going to put them out of business  oh you know that's exactly we did  what did 40 Years of Reagan leaving office the Soviet Union had collapsed I guess I showed them yeah Reagan's most famous moment is a cold warrior came in 87 when he stood in front of the Brandenburg I in Berlin the same place where Kennedy had proclaimed ich bin ein Berliner Reagan stood there and he addressed his remarks to mr. Gorbachev the new premier of the Soviet Union Gorbachev was bringing what was called glass nose and it was kind of a general easing of the rules and letting up allowing private owners stop and so he was basically admitting that hey okay, doesn't his fail we're broke we don't eat food so let's change the game plan well Reagan basically told him the speech he said we'll mr. Gorbachev if you are truly serious about increasing for you if you about Freedom mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall  add course there was a huge Applause from all the Germans and you know what two years later I was sitting in a dorm room in Nashville and I was watching a bunch of young Germans most of them my age or maybe a little older and they were out there Hammers and picks and shovels air in that wall down all those East German guards just stood there and watch them  none of that happened because Reagan said so well not really but it did it contribute you bet  Reagan set a tone he said a tone in the world  that convince the Communist for every level hey this is working this is failing  and that's why those guards stood there and did nothing is a tour that wall down what you got understand about Reagan is the value of optimism the store Reagan had in common with his hero Franklin Roosevelt was this idea that Reagan believe we were The Shining City on the hill he believes our best days are ahead of us and it was contagious folks he believed it so much that he shared it with people and people started believing it in the country's economy started going up and our military started going up in our status in the world started going out who did have any major military engagements he sent troops into Grenada later he bombed qaddafi'd and Olivia cuz vomit  one major Scandal was the Iran-Contra scandal in read about that if you want to it ended up being a whole lot of pure about not much quite frankly but what Reagan left his legacy was the value of Optimus the value of believing in something and I'll tell you my favorite story about Reagan my favorite story about Reagan is Star Wars  SDI Defense Initiative and I remember the Reagan came on TV one night and he basically started out he said she said of nuclear war has trouble me so I have decided to okay the construction of SDI and have these really by our standards primitive graphics Leslie what it showed was it showed a Russian missile coming across the North Pole and you had the satellite up in space and they had a laser beam it would shoot the missile and blow it up that was Strategic Defense Initiative put lasers in space to shoot down Russian missiles I mean I think Myra chain was the typical reaction of every 14 year old in America went awesome  cuz that's awesome it's awesome it's not possible the mathematics involved of having a satellite that's moving in orbit fire a laser shot and hit a missile that's doing about Mach 5 in enlight space orbit boggles the Mind folks  and we couldn't do it then we still can't do it now I don't know bill's due in 30 years historians still debate with a Reagan knew whether or not we could do it but it didn't matter cuz Regan believe sometime in the future we could do any believe we could do anything and he sold it to the American public and of course I'm sure they were scientists All Over America that look each other can we do that and then what you know what happened in Russia they saw that  in the Russian scientist look at each other and they said in the politicians with lasers in space can the Americans do this and their scientist with they seem to be able to do anything  the Russians believe we could do it and after SDI the Russians couldn't wait to negotiate a new treaty a new arms limitation treaty with us everything they brought up they said okay we get rid of these bombers or these missiles no SDI and Reagan and the Russians just drove them nuts because they believe we could do it even though we couldn't  now Reagan leaves office in 88 and George Herbert Walker Bush takes over George Herbert Walker the man who's got the easiest voice of all the presidents in the date because basically you started out with Mister Rogers and yeah Dental John Wayne and pretty soon you got George Herbert Walker bush with me Pro 2000 points alike all right  Bush interesting enough to Austin got portrayed as a went back then I never dinner stand why what's the youngest age in u.s. Navy history he was an All-Star baseball player at Yale he could have gone pro really easy unsteady got married and went into the oil business down in Texas he can't even from old stinky money I mean he had like three ancestors on the Mayflower his dad was a senator Connecticut the bushes were to the Republican party with the Kennedys worth of the democratic party except the bushes bunny went back a lot further what you must call this incredibly interesting life I mean obviously he still alive is like 93 is that very good health but still he comes in play Anna Texas he gets Rich he becomes a congressman from Texas after he's in Congress he comes in and he becomes our first ambassador to China in the mid-70s text George Barber China  there's a pretty good job for can knock not who I don't factor in that one by the way  ask how was the head of the CIA I could tell you what we're doing then I'd have to kill you finally an ad he becomes vice president under Reagan he's vice president for 8 years and then 88 he runs for president now part of him winning in such a landslide and they it had to do with 8 years of the Reagan years but it also had to do with once again the Democrats put a lightweight up against  the Democrats put a guy my name to caucus who's the governor of Massachusetts  and Dukakis is the classic example folks if you're running for office be careful how you your picture taken on top of an M1 Abrams tank hang on the fish don't look like a dork when you run for president that's the best the key there
