Interview with 2017 Innovation in Teaching with Technology Winner: Kevin Hill

The Innovation in Teaching with Technology Award recognizes teachers that exhibit exemplary use of technology to meet state content standards on a regular basis. This award honors teachers that engage and empower students through their understanding of educational technology implementation. The purpose is to recognize and celebrate teachers for outstanding achievement in using technology to enhance instruction.

What do you teach?

I teach 12th grade English and I have been teaching for 15 years.

What's the most rewarding part of being a teacher?

I love having former students come back to visit and tell me they are now attending college and are having success. I love my job, and my students make me laugh everyday. How many people can say that about their job?

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I coach golf and enjoy playing. Also love to read and go to movies. I enjoy any kind of sport activities.

What is one piece of advice you would give to students as they move on from high school?

For those students attending college, my main piece of advice is to go to class. You can be the smartest student in the world, but if you don’t attend class you will not make it. No one takes attendance, you have to develop the self-discipline to attend class.

How has the integration of technology enhanced learning in your classroom?

Using technology in the classroom simply makes students more engaged in the lesson. It’s simply a tool to be used to enhance your lesson. There is really no need to be intimidated by technology. Become an expert in just a few areas and start there.
