Welcome to 10th Grade English

Tenth grade is an important and exciting year!  We will be reading a variety of literature, learning new vocabulary, brushing up on writing skills, and preparing for the writing assessment and TNReady test this spring.  We will be embarking on an exciting adventure, and I'm glad to have your child in my class this year! 

During the 1st Quarter we will be reading Elie Weisel's account of his experiences as a Holocaust survivor in Night. 

During the 2nd Quarter we will be studying rhetoric and how it is used in William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.  (My personal favorite!)

During the 3rd Quarter we will be reading and discussing various short stories, and completing a research project.

During the 4th Quarter we will be reading and discussing the play Twelve Angry Men.

Week of Nov. 9 - 13

Monday, Nov. 9 - Students will define Voc. 11 words.  They will be introduced to the short story "The Cold Equation", and will begin reading.  Progress Reports will be given out.  They are to be taken home, signed, and return by Friday, Nov. 13.
Tuesday, Nov. 10 - Voc. 11 words will be checked.  Voc. 10-2 definitions will be completed.  Flashcards can be made for extra credit.  Students will continue reading "The Cold Equation" and answering the study guide.
Wednesday, Nov. 11 - Veteran's Day holiday
Thursday, Nov. 12 - Students will work on Subject-Verb Agreement problems.  Students will continue reading "The Cold Equation."
Friday, Nov. 13 - Voc. 11 Quiz.  Students will finish reading "The Cold Equation" and finish answering the study guide.
 

Week of Nov. 2 - 6

Monday, Nov. 2 - Students will turn in their projects for "There Will Come Soft Rains."  Students will complete a CFA for Quarter 2.  They will then complete the test and writing assignment for "There will Come Soft Rains."  For the remainder of the class, students can work on Voc. 6-10 Crossword Puzzle which is due Friday, Nov. 6.
Tuesday, Nov. 3 - Students will read "The Monkey's Paw" and answer the study guide.
Wednesday, Nov. 4 - Students will complete the backside of the study guide. Students will be given directions for an alternative assignment to replace a low daily grade.  Alternative assignment is due Friday, Nov. 6, and will not be accepted late.
Thursday, Nov. 5 - Students will begin reading "The Contents of the Dead Man's Pockets" and answer the Study Guide.
Friday, Nov. 6 - Students will take Voc. 6-10 Test and turn in the review study guide.  If students chose to complete the alternative assignment, it is to be turned in at this time.

Week of Oct. 19 - 23

Monday, Oct. 19 - Students will define Voc. 9 words.  Definitions will be checked tomorrow for a grade. Students will use class-room computers to complete a WebQuest on Edgar Allan Poe in order to gain knowledge about Poe's time period, to learn about his life and the affects of his environment on his writing.  If not finished in class, the WebQuest will be finished for homework.
Tuesday, Oct. 20 - Students will complete Voc. 9-2 definitions.  Flash cards may be made for extra credit; they will be checked Wednesday. We will discuss more information on Poe's life, and then begin reading "The Masque of the Red Death" found in the literature book on page 372.  We will also begin answering the study guide.
Wednesday, Oct. 21 - Flashcards will be checked for extra credit.  Students will complete Voc. 9-3 and G.W.U. 9-1.  Students will continue reading, discussing, and answering the study guide for "The Masque of the Red Death".
Thursday, Oct. 22 - Flashcards will be checked for extra credit.  Students will complete Voc. 9-3 and G.W.U. 9-2.  Students will finish reading, discussing, and answering the study guide for "The Masque of the Red Death".
Friday, Oct. 23 - Voc. 9 Quiz.  Students will complete additional assignment on "The Masque of the Red Death".  Students will discuss how Poe uses symbols in his story, and they will be given an assignment on symbols to be turned in Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Week of Oct. 26 - 30

Monday, Oct. 26 - Students will define Voc. 10 words.  Students will use technology to review and show their understanding of  "The Masque of the Red Death."  As an introduction to the short story "There Will Come Soft Rains" the students will define "technology" and list 5 advantages/disadvantages of its use.
Tuesday, Oct. 27 - Students will turn in assignment on Symbols that was given out last Friday.  Students will complete Voc. 10-2 and make flashcards for extra credit. They will view a video of a Smart Home and discuss three technological advances they would include or create for their own Smart Home.  Students will listen to the short story.
Wednesday, Oct. 28 - Students will complete G.W.U. 10-1 and Voc. 10-3.
Students will complete the study guide for the short story "There Will Come Soft Rains" with emphasis on the reading skill - Making Inferences.  They must support their answers with evidence from the text.
Thursday, Oct. 29 - Students will complete G.W.U. 10-2 and Voc. 10-3.
Students will define, identify examples of, and use personification in writing assignment.  Students will be assigned a project (student choice from 4) that will be due on Monday.  The test for this story will be Monday.
Friday, Oct. 30 - Students will complete Voc. 10 Quiz
Students will be given the 50 word crossword puzzle in preparation for the test next Friday.  Students may work on projects and/or prepare for test on the short story on Monday.

Week of Oct. 5 - Oct. 9

Monday, Oct. 5 - Students will define Voc. 8 words.  Students will finish reading Night and work on review study guide.  Night test will be Thursday, Oct. 8.
Tuesday, Oct. 6 - Students will complete Voc. 8-2.  They can make flashcards for extra credit.  We will review Night in preparation for the test on Thursday.  Notebook Test will be tomorrow - Wednesday.
Wednesday, Oct. 7 - Students will complete Voc. 8-3 and G.W.U. 8-1.  Flashcards will be checked.  Students will complete Notebook Test.
Thursday, Oct. 8 - Students will complete G.W.U. 8-2 and Voc. 8-4.  Students will complete Night Test.
Friday, Oct. 9 - Students will complete Voc. 8 Quiz and 9-weeks CFA.
End of Quarter 1.

Week of Sept. 28 - Oct. 2

Monday, Sept. 28 - Students will define Voc. 7 words.  They will begin reading Chapter 6 of Night, and answer the study guide.  
Tuesday, Sept. 29 - Students will complete Voc. 7-2 definitions.  They will be able to make flashcards for extra credit.  They will then continue reading Chapter 6 of Night.
Wednesday, Sept. 30 - Students will take the PLAN Test during 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th periods.  Flashcards will be checked and students will continue reading Night.
Thursday, Oct. 1 - Students will complete Voc. 7-3 and G.W.U. 7-1.  They will continue reading Night.  Students will receive a Notebook Check List.  The Notebook Test will be Wednesday, Oct. 7.
Friday, Oct. 2 - Students will complete Voc. 7 Quiz, and continue reading Night.
CNN Student News article due today.
Students will receive a Notebook Check List.  
The Notebook Test will be Wednesday, Oct. 7.
The Night test will be either Tuesday or Thursday of next week (Oct. 6 or Oct. 8).

Week of Sept. 21 - 25

Monday, Sept. 21 - Vocabulary 6 words will be on the board to define.  We will be continuing our reading of Night with Chapt. 4.
CNN Student News summary will be due Friday.
Tuesday, Sept. 22 - Vocab. 6 will be checked in class.  Vocab. 6-2 will be completed in class and flashcards can be completed for extra credit.  We will continue reading and answering the Night Study Guide.
Wednesday, Sept. 23 - Vocab. 6-3 sentences and G.W.U. 6-1 will be completed in class.  We will continue reading and answering the Night Study Guide.
Thursday, Sept. 24 - Vocab. 6-3 sentences and G.W.U. 6-2 will be completed in class.  We will continue reading and answering the Night Study Guide.
Friday, Sept. 25 - Vocab. 6 Quiz will be taken in class.  Students will turn in CNN Student News summary.  We will continue reading and answering the Night Study Guide.
 

Week of Sept. 14 - 17

Monday, Sept. 14 - Students will meet in A26 for the English Benchmark Test.
Tuesday, Sept. 15 - Students will meet in Library for orientation and for safe information.
Wednesday, Sept. 16 - Students will begin reading Chapter 4 of Night.
Thursday, Sept. 17 - Students will turn in CNN Student News Summary.  Students will complete Voc. 1-5  Test and turn in the Voc. review crossword puzzle.  They will continue reading Chapter 4 in Night.  
Parent Conferences are from 3 to 6 PM.
Friday, Sept. 18 - Holiday for students.

Week of Sept. 8 - 11

Tuesday, Sept. 8 - Students will define Voc. 5 words.  We will finish Chapter 2 of Night, and begin reading Chapter 3.  We will also answer the study guide.
Wednesday, Sept. 9 - Students will complete Voc. 5-2.  Students can make flashcards for Extra Credit.  We will continue reading Night.
Thursday, Sept. 10 - Students will review the rules for correctly using semicolons in a compound sentence.  They will practice this skill in class.  Students will then continue reading Night.
Friday, Sept. 11 - Students will complete Voc. 5 Quiz.  They will then work on the Voc. 1-5 review in preparation for the Vocabulary Unit Test on Thursday, Sept. 17.

Week of Aug. 31 - Sept. 4

Monday - Students will define Voc. 4 words.  Students will complete worksheet on "Keep Memory Alive", which reviews the literary analysis of the speech.  Students will be formally introduced to Night.  
Due to complications in Power School, Progress Reports will either be given out today or tomorrow.  They will need to have parent signatures and be returned to us by Friday for the extra credit.
Tuesday - Students will use their vocabulary 4 definitions to complete Voc. 4-2.
We will begin reading Night in class and answering the study guide.
Students can make flashcards for extra credit.
Wednesday - Students will edit G.W.U. 4-1 and complete Voc. 4-3.
Students will continue reading Chapter 1 and answering the study guide.
Thursday -  Students will edit G.W.U. 4-2 and complete Voc. 4-3.
Students will continue to read Chapter 2 and to answer the study guide.  CNN Student News summary is due in class tomorrow.
Friday - Students will complete Voc. 4 Quiz.  
They will turn in CNN Student News Summary.  
We will continue with the reading of Night and answering the study guide.
 

Week of August 24 - 28

August 24 - Vocabulary 3 words will be on the board for students to define.  Students will continue to analyze George Washington's Farewell Address.

August 25 - Students are to make flashcards for Voc. 3 words for extra credit.  Students will complete an assignment that will demonstrate understanding of the importance of Washington's speech.

August 26 - Students will review grammar conventions by completing G.W.U. 3-1 and will review vocabulary by completing Voc. 3-3.  Students will read and analyze Eli Weisel's speech "Keep the Memory Alive" as a prelude to the reading of Night.

August 28 - Vocabulary 3 Quiz.  Students will complete an assignment on "Keep the Memory Alive."
