STEM I

Overview:

Welcome back.  I hope everyone had a restful and fun time off for winter break.  BTW, Happy New Year. I am not going to Jinx it, so, let us just jump right back into the swing of things. Starting a new course.  Alright, we are kicking things off looking at physics of amusement park rides.  Specifically, roller coasters.  We will start with some basic energy terms and overview information.  Then, design and construct a roller coaster.  We will have several mediums to work with as this project goes forward.  As you think of what you may wish to do to accomplish this project, start gathering your supplies and work with me to be sure you are ready to start design and construction of your final project.

Week at a Glance:

4 Jan - Students are off .  Curve files are open for those wanting to get a jump on the material

5 Jan – Begin by watching the video The Art of Paper Roller Coasters, and perhaps a few more real coaster videos, then going over the worksheet “The Roller Coaster Worksheet Activity” (TRCWA) and the associated web-page

6 Jan – Continue working on the TRCWA.  This is a large packet with web simulation interactions. Take your time but be consistent.

7 Jan – Review Roller Coaster project rubric and discuss previous student examples and potential submissions. Finish and turn in TRCWA.

8 Jan – Review TRCWA for those needing more attention and focus of project intent to include necessary supplies and warnings to not go overboard on this.

Overview:

Working on our roller coaster concepts this week.  Also, adding in an overview of an entire park to focus on math and geographical coordinates.  This project will span the roller coaster project.  If you have your parts to begin the coaster, begin.  Then, you will work on the amusement park after the coaster to give others time to complete their coaster.  In reverse, if you are having a delay in getting your materials, you can work on the amusement park.

Week at a Glance:

11 Jan – Turn-in final roller coaster design card. Review PDF of Amusement Park Map pdf.

12 Jan – Online students, walk through the Amusement Park Project in Zoom. Work on roller coaster if you have your material or work on Amusement Park Map.

13Jan – Work on roller coaster if you have your material or work on Amusement Park Map

14 Jan – Review cost estimates of coaster and write up a cost estimate projection for your coaster. Work on roller coaster if you have your material or work on Amusement Park Map

15 Jan – Work on roller coaster if you have your material or work on Amusement Park Map

Re-calculate your current expenditure, what you believe you are going to spend as you go forward, and adjust, if necessary, your original figures. Explain, what you are doing differently and why. Do this on the “Milestone 2 – Cost Analysis worksheet, will be available today.

22 Jan - Work on either the Amusement Park Map or the Roller Coaster
