Course Description
The purpose of this course is to teach you the foundation of the Spanish language, as well as introduce you to the various cultures of Spanish speaking countries. Our goals for this course are:
- To understand written and spoken Spanish
- To speak Spanish
- To prepare you for Spanish II
Grading
Grades will be determined according to the following:
Tests – 30%
Quizzes/projects – 30%
Classwork/Participation – 30%
Homework – 10%
Tests/Quizzes
Vocabulary quizzes will be given twice per chapter. Tests will be given every 2-3 weeks. The date will be announced ahead of time.
Quarter Project
Each quarter, students will do a project on a specific topic in Spanish. The topic will be announced in advance and a rubric will be provided.
Para Empezar
Each day, when you enter the classroom, you should sit down in your assigned seat and begin the Para Empezar (getting started) activity.

- Show respect towards everyone
Consequences
- Verbal warning
- Contact parent/guardian

Electronics Policy
Our assignments will be completed on the school assigned laptop and therefore other electronics are usually not necessary. Other electronics, i.e. cell phones, etc. are only to be used with permission of the teacher and only for the current assignment.
Makeup Work
It is the student’s responsibility to learn what the missing assignments are and to turn them in. Check Canvas for all assignments. Students have one day for each day absent to turn in makeup work. If a student is absent for an extended period of time, please see the teacher regarding due dates for makeup work.
Materials Needed
You will be provided with access to the online textbook and there will be a set of textbooks for use in the classroom. I recommend that you have a place for notes and a place to keep handouts and graded assignments. For some listening/speaking activities, a pair of headphones/earbuds is helpful but not required.

Quarter 1- Para Empezar and Chapters 1 & 2
Quarter 2- Chapters 3 & 4
Quarter 3- Chapters 5 & 6
Quarter 4- Chapters 7, 8, & 9
